Description
PGPI-HC: Positive Ground Power Inverter – High Current
Power Inverter for Positive Ground Systems (for negative ground systems please see NGVB-HC)
The PGPI-HC Power Inverter will operate 12-volt negative ground accessories from 6, 8 or 12 volt positive ground electrical systems.
It uses a common ground, so isolation is not necessary, and since it is an efficient design, it’s current draw is negligible when no load is applied. Unlike conventional inverters which use a transformer, it can be used for memory maintenance or alarm systems in the standby mode for long periods of time without discharging the battery. Quiescent current draw is about 10 milli-amps.
The inverter is a cube 1-3/4 inches on each side. Due to its very small size, it can often be mounted directly to the accessory it is intended to operate.
The PGPI-HC power inverter is designed to operate with any input voltage from -4 volts to -16 volts. It is protected against reverse polarity, overload and short circuits. Note: For continued protection, never replace the input fuse with anything greater than a 7.5-amp fast acting (3AG type) fuse!
The maximum output power is a function of input voltage. The greater the input voltage, the greater the output voltage will be. When used in a 6-volt system (operating at 7.2-volts), it can continuously supply about 2.1 amps, or 26.5 watts. You should know the average and peak power requirements that your accessory will require. Brief excursions above the maximum output rating will not damage the power inverter but may result in reduced output voltage while the overcurrent condition exists. For 12-volt systems (operating at 14.4-volts), the available output power is increased considerably, and the power inverter can power loads up to 4 amps continuously.
Installation of the PGPI-HC: Using the mounting screw and lock washer provided (remove the black wire connected to the top of the case), fasten the unit directly to a metal (grounded) surface behind the dash or in any convenient location. If it i not possible to directly attach the power inverter to a metal, grounded surface, the black wire provided may be run from the case screw to vehicle ground. Note: The power inverter must have a good (chassis) ground to operate properly. Connect the input wire (blue wire with the fuse) to the ACC terminal of the ignition switch or the power source for the accessory being connected (example: The radio terminal of the fuse block). Connect the output wire (red wire) to the power input of the accessory you intend to operate
For troubleshooting tips or further information please reference the instruction manual.
This inverter is designed to power car radios and other accessories. This unit is not recommended for power actuated door locks, trunk release solenoids, air conditioner clutches, fans, blowers, power windows or other electromechanical devices. This inverter will not work in negative ground electrical systems.
